Thursday 11 June, UnionLearn Conference, London
David Cowey (Go Skills) and Jess Wakelin, Sue Downie and Charlotte McConnell (Tribal) represented BLOOM at this important conference in June. Popular TV star, comedian and novelist Jo Brand, chaired the third unionlearn annual conference, where the TUC's learning and skills organisation celebrated the training of 24,000 union learning reps (ULRs). More. . .
Unionlearn and trade unions have surpassed the target of 22,000 ULRs by 2010 set with the Government. Jo presented the unionlearn Quality Award to 27 education providers for providing courses tailored to trade union members' needs.
In this context BLOOM aroused much interest from the delegates: the stand was very busy all day with people wanting to try out the materials on the PDAs. Jennifer Kissi-Debrah of Customer Sevices Eurostar, and a ULR herself said ‘from what I have seen today BLOOM would definitely help colleagues to improve their skills’. Ian Lewis (Project Manager working in the taxi industry) explained that as students are not in college regularly BLOOM would be a great help with understandin and to do revision for formal tests.
Representatives from BECTU (Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematographic and Theatre Union felt BLOOM would help their organisation by providing demos, revision and information on many subject areas – for example health and safety and induction for staff.
Union learn delegate was very enthusiastic ‘this would be engaging, fun and a different way of learning – I am very excited by mobile technolgy’.
